New clover-safe herbicide approved

An exciting new clover-safe herbicide from Corteva Agriscience, ProClova® XL, has been approved by Pesticide Registration and Control Divisions (PRCD) and will be presented to the Irish market by Whelehan Crop Protection.

With both environmental and financial challenges, there has never been so much interest in growing home-grown proteins, while also minimising the use of artificial fertilisers. Clover plays an important role in this regard.

That’s what makes this new authorisation secured by Corteva, a merger of Dow AgroSciences, Pioneer and DuPont, significant. With an annual R&D spend of $1.3 billion, there are few other companies able to fund the discovery and development of a new herbicide, particularly one safe to clover.

It typically takes 10 years to bring a new active ingredient to market from discovery to product launch. In ProClova XL, the new active ingredient is called Rinskor™ or florpyrauxifen-benzyl.

ProClova XL gives much better control and is more consistent and reliable in its effect on established docks than the current standard. It also has a much wider weed spectrum than other clover-safe herbicides when spraying newly sown leys.

Robin Bentley, Category Marketing Manager at Corteva Agriscience, says: “To develop a weed control solution safe to both grass and clover which can be used on newly sown leys for seedling weed control as well as on bigger perennial weeds in established grassland reflects the outstanding technology this product represents.

“Today’s herbicides are developed to have increasingly favourable environmental profiles, and Rinskor active is a prime example. It has a reduced environmental impact because it breaks down rapidly in soil, water and the tissue of tolerant plants, such as grassland and rice. It has a low dose rate compared to many other herbicides and its ecological profile has earned Rinskor several international awards, including a Green Chemistry Challenge Award.”

Chris Maughan, Technical Manager at Whelehans, says: “ProClova XL will resonate widely as many newly sown leys are planted and then swamped with weeds which limit the ley’s potential on both quantity and quality of forage. The product should be available from April and we look forward to sharing more details soon.”
